New Yorkers urged to close windows as huge fire rips through Brooklyn building
"A huge fire has erupted in a building in Brooklyn overnight, unleashing devastating flames. A commercial building in Red Hook has been extensively damaged in the blaze, which broke out at around 11.35pm on Wednesday. Massive flames could be seen from miles away. "This building is a very large, four-story commercial building. Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on the second, third, fourth floor and through the roof," FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said early Thursday morning. "Due to the amount of fire and the structural stability of the building, we removed all members and attacked the fire from the exterior.""
"More than 250 firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the fire after it grew from a two-alarm to a five-alarm response. The building, at 481 Van Brunt Street, is located right by the waterfront and a marine unit was called to help put out the fire. "We had extensive damage to this building. We had the roof collapse, and we also had the fourth floor collapse. So we will have structural engineers evaluate that," Woods said."
An overnight five-alarm fire devastated a four-story commercial building in Red Hook, Brooklyn, beginning around 11:35 p.m. Fire consumed the second through fourth floors and spread through the roof, with massive flames visible miles away. More than 250 firefighters responded and attacked the blaze from the exterior due to structural instability, and a marine unit assisted because the building sits by the waterfront. The roof and fourth floor collapsed and structural engineers will evaluate the site. Residents were advised to close windows for smoke and traffic delays were expected. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and are expected to recover. The building, believed unoccupied, contained artwork for an upcoming show.
