NYC hosts its first public Muslim Heritage Month celebration

"Governor Kathy Hochul proclaimed January 2026 as Muslim-American Heritage Month to honor the contributions of adherents of the world's second-largest religion, particularly in New York's diverse ethnic and cultural population. A capstone to that celebration takes place Wednesday evening, Jan. 28, at the Rotunda of the New York County Supreme Courthouse on Centre Street. The New York City Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes, partnering with the Muslim Community Network, will honor the myriad cultural and historical contributions of Muslim New Yorkers."

"The Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes leads the city's coordinated, community-centered approach to preventing hate crimes and bias-based incidents, coordinating with an interagency committee of more than 20 city agencies and all five district attorneys' hate crimes units, and also supports healing programs for victims and their affected neighborhoods. The Manhattan-based Muslim Community Network offers programs in education and advocacy, interfaith partnerships, community service and empowering youth. They serve more than 2,400 meals annually and 2,000-plus Iftars during Ramadan."

New York City will celebrate its first public observance of Muslim-American Heritage Month in January 2026 following a gubernatorial proclamation. A capstone event on Jan. 28 at the Rotunda of the New York County Supreme Courthouse will draw hundreds and feature community representatives sharing diverse stories of Muslim life. The New York City Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes is partnering with the Manhattan-based Muslim Community Network to honor cultural and historical contributions. The Office coordinates with more than 20 city agencies and all five district attorneys' hate crimes units and supports healing programs. The Muslim Community Network provides education, advocacy, interfaith partnerships, community service, youth empowerment, and meal and Iftar programs.
