"The addition of a whole new 60,000 sq. ft building marks a significant milestone for the museum, doubling its footprint to 120,000 sq. ft and creating more space for galleries and artist studios. The space is envisioned as a seamless and complementary extension of the New Museum's Sanaa-designed flagship building, completed in 2007."
"The expansion has a spacious lobby, a large sky room on the seventh floor offering panoramic views of Manhattan, a shop with art books and limited-edition objects and a 74-seat theatre for lectures, performances and screenings. A restaurant serving a menu by the chef Julia Sherman includes a commission by Ian Cheng and furniture designed by Minjae Kim."
"On the upper levels, there is a new artist-in-residence studio that allows the museum to support an even more robust programme for artists in New York City and from around the world. The expansion also incorporates a permanent home for New Inc, the New Museum's incubator for art and technology founded in 2014."
New York's New Museum unveils an ambitious $82 million expansion after four years of construction, adding a 60,000 sq. ft building that doubles the museum's total footprint to 120,000 sq. ft. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning firm OMA in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, the new building complements the original 2007 Sanaa-designed structure through an open design featuring glass and metal facades, a central atrium, and a public plaza. The expansion includes a spacious lobby, seventh-floor sky room with Manhattan views, a 74-seat theatre, a restaurant by chef Julia Sherman, and artist-in-residence studios. Permanent art commissions by Tschabalala Self, Klára Hosnedlová, and Sarah Lucas anchor public spaces. The expansion also provides a permanent home for New Inc, the museum's art and technology incubator founded in 2014.
