Dragons' Den entrepreneur wins High Court battle with rival dog toilet inventor
"Rebecca Sloan, 39, first trademarked her product real turf in a biodegradable litter tray for housetraining dogs in 2016. Her idea was a hit on the BBC show in 2022, securing offers from four Dragons, with Ms Sloan eventually accepting Steven Bartlett's 50,000 investment."
"Ms Sloan alleged that Ms Walker-Fooks had deliberately infringed her trademark in online marketing materials to capitalise on Piddle Patch's fame. After a trial at the High Court in Manchester, a judge has now found the infringement was deliberate, meaning that Ms Sloan's company will receive a compensation payout."
Rebecca Sloan, 39, developed an innovative indoor dog toilet product consisting of real turf in a biodegradable litter tray for housetraining dogs. She trademarked the product in 2016 and appeared on Dragon's Den in 2022, securing a £50,000 investment from Steven Bartlett. Sloan's company, Makeality Ltd, subsequently engaged in a High Court trademark dispute with competitor Laurencia Walker-Fooks, 34, and her company City Doggo Ltd. Sloan alleged that Walker-Fooks deliberately infringed her trademark in online marketing materials to capitalize on Piddle Patch's popularity. Following a trial at Manchester High Court, the judge determined the infringement was deliberate, resulting in a compensation award to Sloan's company, with damages yet to be assessed.
