Carmel's nightlife, primarily recognized through iconic establishments Sade's and Barmel, is threatened as both are closing due to landlord disputes. Sade's, founded in 1926, is a small, yet vibrant establishment that serves as a hub for locals and visitors alike. The bar's crowded atmosphere showcases its significance to the community, attracting a diverse clientele. Owner Parker Logan emphasizes Sade's role as a welcoming space for everyone in Carmel. With the impending closure, the future of this historical dive bar remains uncertain, particularly as it approaches its 100th anniversary.
Sade's was founded in 1926, but it may not live to see its 100th birthday. The oversized plate glass storefront features a Dutch door and a small carved sign that hangs overhead with the bar's name and the year of its founding.
The place is a bigger-than-life institution. On any given night from about 9 p.m. on, crowds are so robust they spill out into the street and mingle.
Sade's, as it's been for nearly a century, is for 'everyone else' in Carmel. 'We proudly carry that torch,' owner Parker Logan said.
Both Sade's and Barmel, legacy establishments of Carmel, are set to go dark themselves for good due to landlord disputes.
