A group of retail thieves targeting Home Depot stores across the Bay Area is facing sentencing that will impact the narrative around retail crime. Business owners emphasize that these thefts extend beyond lost merchandise to threaten community safety. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office, under Jeff Rosen, intends to set a clear precedent by prosecuting these thieves as a serious organized crime issue. Recent legislation has enabled law enforcement to better address retail theft, with the intent of making communities safer for both shoppers and businesses.
"This isn't just about business losses - it's about protecting people who shop, work and live in our communities," Home Depot Asset Protection Divisional Director Larry Caylor said.
"These are not shoplifters; this is a determined, destructive and dangerous thieving crew of individuals. They struck nearly 200 times in a four-month period, hitting Home Depots in every county in the Bay Area," DA Jeff Rosen stated.
