Despite anti-Trump rhetoric, Newsom reverses on EV credit for Californians
""We can't make up for federal vandalism of those tax credits," Newsom told reporters at a brief press conference."
""There are billions and billions of dollars through 2045 in the cap-and-trade program that continue to make those infrastructure investments, but not the direct subsidies - that we cannot make up for - that were eliminated under the federal program," the governor said."
""Governor Newsom commits to restarting state's [zero emission vehicle] rebate program if federal tax credit is eliminated,""
""environmental injury""
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed six energy and climate bills and emphasized countering the "environmental injury" of the federal government while lowering living costs. He previously pledged in November to replace the federal $7,500 EV tax credit if it was eliminated. The federal credit has been canceled effective Sept. 30, but the state will not recreate the direct rebate program. State funds will focus on physical infrastructure, including tens of thousands of public EV chargers. Cap-and-trade funds through 2045 will support infrastructure investments, but the state will not substitute for eliminated federal direct subsidies amid a large budget deficit and required legislative action.
