A 56-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison for running a large illegal cannabis grow in a national forest near Monterey. His operations were tied to the Dolan Fire that ravaged the area in 2020, which was set intentionally by another rogue grower. Investigators found multiple illegal grows in the forest, with Cruz's site clearing native vegetation for around 10,000 plants, and storing harmful chemicals and waste. In addition to the prison term, Cruz must undergo three years of supervised release and pay a $35,000 fine.
