California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit against President Trump for deploying National Guard troops without proper notification. The lawsuit asserts that these troop deployments were unnecessary and politically motivated. Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that this federal action represents an abuse of authority. In a court hearing, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer questioned whether the federal government complied with legal statutes regarding troop deployment, signaling the possibility of issuing a preliminary injunction against using the National Guard, while the status of the Marines was less clear.
"There is no invasion. There is no rebellion. The President is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said.
"The Department of Justice called the lawsuit a 'crass political stunt endangering American lives' in a Wednesday court filing."
