Corale Olsen, a nine-year-old, was bitten by a sea lion while out at surf camp with her siblings. The instructor, Alex De Marignac, acted quickly to get the children to shore. Injuries from the bite included small puncture wounds and bruising, requiring a trip to the emergency room. Such attacks are rare; aggressive behavior can occur due to factors like toxic algae or territoriality. Corale remains enthusiastic about surfing and intends to return to the water despite her experience.
Corale Olsen described the moment of the attack, saying, 'It was right next to me, and I was like Oh my gosh, something really bad is going to happen.' Then it just bit me, said Corale. It was pain, and then I was screaming.'
Instructor Alex De Marignac noted, 'I have surfed in these waters since I was about 6-years-old, but never ever seen something like that.' He quickly brought the kids to safety, demonstrating critical thinking and care during the incident.
Regarding the bite, experts pointed out that aggressive behavior in sea lions can occur due to factors such as domoic acid poisoning from toxic algae or territorial instincts.
Despite the incident, Corale remains determined, stating, 'I'm not letting this attack stop me from getting back in the water, and I still love the ocean.'
