Search continues for toddler lost in cataclysmic California storm
"A cataclysmic storm rolled into San Bernardino County on Thursday, trapping highway drivers in mudslides and triggering rescue operations throughout the area, including an ongoing search for a 2-year-old boy. The National Weather Service issued its first flash flood warning for the San Bernardino Mountains, which includes towns like Oak Glen and Lake Arrowhead, at 2:13 p.m. and lasted until 8 p.m., meteorologist Ashley Nickerson told SFGATE."
"Although the region only saw between one to two inches of rain total, the storm triggered mudslides on Highway 38 and closed over 30 miles of roadway, according to Caltrans. The dangerous conditions stranded 10 people in their cars on Highway 38 near Jenks Lake and the San Bernardino National Forest. Cal Fire spokesperson Alison Hesterly told SFGATE the trapped drivers have been rescued."
"In a post on social media, Caltrans contributed the excess debris to the El Dorado Fire that ravaged the area in 2020. "The debris flow is from the El Dorado fire, and that mountain peak has an extremely high elevation out of reach for even the most experienced contractors," Caltrans said in a comment on a Facebook post. "That fire cause severe terrain damage that has forever changed the scope of that area.""
"In Barstow, the search for a 2-year-old boy is ongoing after he and his father were separated in a flood. Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Barstow first responders received a call to rescue Brandon Padilla Aguilera and his son, Xavier, according to a Facebook post from the Barstow Police Department. Brandon was taken to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was released."
A cataclysmic storm struck San Bernardino County on Thursday, causing mudslides that trapped drivers and prompted multiple rescue operations, including a search for a missing 2-year-old. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the San Bernardino Mountains from 2:13 p.m. to 8 p.m. Although the area received only one to two inches of rain, mudslides on Highway 38 closed over 30 miles of roadway and stranded ten people, who were later rescued. Caltrans linked excess debris to the 2020 El Dorado Fire and cited severe terrain damage. Oak Glen residents sheltered in place while crews worked to clear roads. Barstow responders treated and released a father while the search for his son continued.
