Top Alameda County election official to step down

"The long-time election official, who has also served as the county's main internet technology executive for nearly 15 years, told us that he gave notice of his plans one or two weeks ago to the Board of Supervisors and county administrator. He said stepping down in March will give the county seven months' notice to find and hire a new leader or leaders for the two positions."

"I'll get through the redistricting election, in November 2025, he said, the certification of that election, and by March 2026, we will have gotten through defining the June primary where any candidates will be known and the ballot design for that primary will have been onboarded. The registrar expects a nice handoff and doesn't anticipate any problems with the June 2026 primary elections."

"Last week, board president Nate Miley acknowledged that Dupuis was planning to leave his positions. The announcement came just before the Board of Supervisors approved a directive that would require the registrar to partner with the National Elections Center in a comprehensive evaluation of his position in the aftermath of two critical county reviews of his performance. I thank him for all the good work he did as information technology director and for the challenges he faces as ROV, Miley said."

Tim Dupuis confirmed he will retire in March 2026 and gave one to two weeks' notice to the Board of Supervisors and county administrator. He plans to oversee the November 2025 redistricting election, its certification, and finalize June 2026 primary candidate lists and ballot design before departing. Dupuis expects a smooth handoff and does not anticipate problems with the June 2026 primary. He has led the county's IT functions for nearly 15 years and said the 230-person team is solid and recently received an award. Dupuis cited health and family as reasons for stepping down. The Board approved a directive for an external evaluation and may separate the registrar and IT roles.
