Carney's 'Buy Canadian' policy expected to be fully in place next year: source | CBC News
"We are starting from scratch,"
"implement an assertive policy, while complying with our free trade agreements."
"As the prime minister announced earlier this month, new measures will be introduced by November 2025 to make sure that Canadian suppliers and their products are prioritized in all federal spending,"
"Canada's new government will ensure that the public sector can serve as an anchor customer for Canadian businesses, and move from an approach of 'best effort' to a clear obligation to support Canadian industries."
A senior federal source said the "Buy Canadian" policy will be featured in the fall federal budget with initial elements as early as November and full application in 2026. The source said details in the November budget will be key and that new funding is expected to be attached. The government is balancing an assertive domestic procurement approach with compliance to free trade agreements. Finance, industry and procurement ministers are involved, with the procurement minister charged with implementation. The Prime Minister's Office said further details will emerge when the budget is tabled on Nov. 4.
