"I'm terrified,"
"This is a Canadian historic treasure."
"How did this one slip through the cracks?"
"That's what I'm struggling to understand. It should've been on the list."
A 20-hectare property on the Holland River near Newmarket was purchased by Pentacore Development in 2023 for $6.8 million. Pentacore plans a 161-unit townhouse development on the property. The town issued a demolition permit in June 2024 for several derelict buildings on the site. Residents discovered a log cabin hidden by trees that could be over 200 years old and found evidence of past First Nations habitation and possible artifacts. Councillors and local history advocates are seeking to protect the site and consider converting it into an education centre. The town is moving to revoke the demolition permit, which remains in effect for now.
