Ontario Place construction could dump sewage in lake, creating a 'preventable public health crisis': doctor | CBC News
"We're here to talk about sewage and the possibility of raw sewage being discharged right into Lake Ontario the water we swim in, row on and rely on, Samson said."
"But this isn't just about sewage. It's about democracy."
Advocates, local politicians and a Toronto doctor are raising environmental and public-health concerns about the provincial government's redevelopment of Ontario Place, warning that planned interim sewage work could involve rerouting combined sewer overflows. The province alerted the City of Toronto that interim sewage work at the waterfront could begin this month and be completed by March. The redevelopment, led by Austrian firm Therme, includes plans for a luxury spa and alterations to the sewer system. The province proposed redirecting a sewage pipe to empty behind an existing breakwater into the West Channel to protect a planned western public beach, prompting fears of pollution in the West Channel. A previously posted vague environmental registry notice was withdrawn after public concern and may now be reintroduced.
