"Three more speed cameras have been damaged in Toronto, city officials say marking the 20th time the devices were tampered with in just a week. The City of Toronto said in an email to CBC News on Friday that three cameras were vandalized early Sunday morning. The cameras were located in the areas of Castlefield Avenue and Avenue Road, Avenue Road and Oaklands Avenue, and at Mount Pleasant Road and South Drive."
"Premier Doug Ford has taken a stance against speed cameras, calling them a "tax grab," and has urged municipalities like Toronto to get rid of them entirely. Earlier this week at the International Plowing Match in the Niagara Region, Ford applauded the City of Vaughan's decision to stop their speed camera enforcement program. "I'm proud of Mayor [Steven] Del Duca ... there's so many way to reduce and slow down traffic than gouging people when they go three kilometers over the speed limit," said Ford."
Three more pole-mounted speed cameras in Toronto were vandalized, marking the 20th tampering incident in one week. The damaged units were located near Castlefield Avenue and Avenue Road, Avenue Road and Oaklands Avenue, and Mount Pleasant Road and South Drive. Sixteen other cameras were damaged on Sept. 9, and the Parkside Drive camera was cut down for the seventh time in 10 months on Sept. 7. Toronto police received reports and said they will increase officer presence and resources around targeted areas. Pole-mounted speed cameras have been vandalized at least 25 times since last November, and political leaders have criticized enforcement programs and their costs.
