The Real ID Deadline Ended Up Not Mattering
Briefly

As the enforcement of the Real ID law began on May 7, 2025, many Americans rushed to obtain compliant IDs due to fears of travel disruptions. However, initial reports suggest that airports are handling non-compliant travelers with warnings rather than severe penalties, allowing passage with minimal consequence. For instance, passengers at LaGuardia and other major airports received informational flyers rather than experiencing stricter screenings. The TSA confirmed that while non-compliant individuals will be flagged, additional screening may not be immediate. This suggests a more lenient approach than expected during the first days of enforcement.
At LaGuardia Airport, lacking a REAL ID yields a leaflet and an admonition to go get one soon but no additional security screening.
If you have a non-compliant state ID or driver's license and do not have another acceptable form of ID, you'll be notified of your noncompliance.
