"The Hive, designed by Dialog, is the tallest seismic-force-resisting building made from mass timber in North America, substituting mass timber for typical steel-and-concrete construction."
"Mass timber is naturally more resilient to seismic activity than steel and concrete, making it a favorable choice for buildings in earthquake-prone regions."
"There are around 2,700 mass timber buildings either constructed or in the works in the U.S., more than double than back in 2022."
"Architecture firms like Dialog are experimenting with strategies to make mass timber buildings more common and safe, as seen in the design of the Hive."
The Hive is a 10-story office building in Vancouver made from mass timber, designed to be earthquake-resistant. It sequesters 4,403 metric tons of CO2, equivalent to removing 1,300 cars from the road for a year. Mass timber is more resilient to seismic activity compared to traditional materials. Interest in mass timber construction is growing, with around 2,700 buildings in the U.S. either built or planned. The Hive features a unique joint system inspired by tectonic plates to enhance safety in earthquake-prone areas.
