After moving from Vancouver to Birmingham for financial reasons, initial savings were evident; housing and living costs were much lower. However, after a year of living in Birmingham, the cost of living increased due to inflation and additional expenses like council tax and TV licenses. Despite the lower cost of living, the desire to be near nature and overall happiness led to the decision to move back near Vancouver, accepting higher living costs for satisfaction.
Moving from Vancouver to Birmingham seemed economically wise, as rent and living expenses were significantly lower at first, making it appear that we could save money.
However, the high did not last long, and after a year, the cost of living in Birmingham surged, closely mirroring Vancouver's prices due to inflation and a cost-of-living crisis.
New expenses such as council tax and a TV license emerged when we moved out on our own, further complicating the financial landscape.
Ultimately, staying near Vancouver brings greater personal satisfaction, as being close to nature outweighs financial concerns in a high-cost area.
