"The Hagerty Drivers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to preserving automotive culture, will showcase Andy Warhol's legendary 1979 BMW M1 Art Car as part of its annual Cars at the Capital exhibition. Displayed inside the Foundation's signature glass enclosure, the Warhol BMW M1 will officially become the 37th vehicle documented in the National Historic Vehicle Register, with records permanently archived in the U.S. Library of Congress."
"Unlike other artists in the BMW Art Car series who used assistants, Warhol painted directly onto the car himself, completing the project in just 23 minutes. His goal was to capture the sensation of speed, famously remarking, "I attempted to show speed as a visual image. When the automobile is really traveling fast, all the lines and colors are transformed in a blur.""
From September 17–23, 2025, Washington D.C.'s National Mall will host the Warhol 1979 BMW M1 Art Car inside a glass enclosure as part of Cars at the Capital. The vehicle will be documented as the 37th entry in the National Historic Vehicle Register with records archived in the U.S. Library of Congress. The Hagerty Drivers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to preserving automotive culture, will present the car free to the public near the Smithsonian museums. Andy Warhol painted the M1 himself in 23 minutes to convey the sensation of speed. The M1 finished 6th overall and 2nd in class at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car belongs to the BMW Art Car Collection, a project that began after Hervé Poulain commissioned Alexander Calder to transform a BMW for competition.
