Bob Gurr, a prominent designer at Disneyland since 1954, is known for creating crucial attractions such as the Monorail and Haunted Mansion's doom buggies. His nostalgic attachment to a vintage fire engine on Main Street U.S.A. stems from his teenage experience driving a similar vehicle. In 1958, after mentioning the missing fire engine to Walt Disney, Gurr was thrilled when Walt expedited the project’s approval. Now 93, Gurr shares his rich history through tours, becoming a cherished figure among Disney fans for his stories and insights into the park's legacy.
Gurr has often joked that if it's at Disneyland and it moves, he likely had a hand in its design, shaping the park's experience.
But one day in 1958 Gurr would get his fire engine. Walt Disney personally facilitated the purchase for Main Street, fulfilling Gurr's dream.
