Kia's Making More Affordable EVs. It Won't Make Dirt-Cheap Ones
"It's not my job to fight the Chinese on price."
"EVs also still aren't generating the same margins as ICE cars. That said, we might have an EV1 one day, but Kia-which is one of the [world's most] profitable automakers-has zero interest in not making enough money."
"To sell an EV even at €22,000, you have to make compromises on content, which is not something Kia is interested in doing."
Kia will begin production of the EV2 in February with a starting price near $35,000, making it the brand's cheapest BEV. The EV2 is unlikely to be offered in the U.S. and represents a small electric crossover targeting European markets. Kia states EVs are not yet at price parity with ICE cars and that BEVs still deliver lower margins than ICE vehicles. The company refuses to cut content or quality to reach a roughly €22,000 ($26,000) target because doing so would eliminate necessary profit. Chinese automakers are expected to pursue lower-priced EVs.
