Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company plans to begin public driverless rides in Austin, Texas, on June 22, introducing its long-awaited robotaxi service. Due to safety considerations, this launch date may change. Previously, Tesla had been preparing for a robotaxi rollout as early as 2020. The new ‘unsupervised’ Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will enable these rides, although they will initially operate in geofenced regions deemed safe. This marks a shift from earlier claims about general-use self-driving technology.
Musk has spent years claiming Teslas would be able to drive themselves. In 2019, he claimed Tesla would launch a robotaxi service in 2020 that would feature one million driverless vehicles. That never happened.
Musk claimed Tuesday that 'every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised driving,' yet the initial robotaxi fleet will be limited to pre-defined safe areas.
