Tesla has initiated the expansion of its Robotaxi program in Austin, Texas, by inviting select participants for rides. The initial rollout began on June 22, with a small group of notable Tesla community members receiving invitations. Since the initial invites, very few additional invites have been sent. The company is deliberately expanding the rider group and geofence cautiously to ensure safety. CEO Elon Musk indicated plans for rapid growth in service areas, aiming for driverless rides without geographical restrictions by the end of the year.
"We are being very cautious. We do not want to take any chances, so we are going to go cautiously. But the service areas and the number of vehicles in operation will increase at a hyper-exponential rate," CEO Elon Musk said during the Q2 Earnings Call.
"Tesla plans to have at least half of the U.S. population with access to a Robotaxi by the end of the year."
