Feline Health Center initiative to track avian flu spread in cats | Cornell Chronicle
Briefly

The Cornell Feline Health Center (CFHC) is initiating a pilot project in New York to investigate H5N1 avian influenza among cats. This initiative aims to understand how the virus spreads between cats and impacts public health. The CFHC Feline H5N1 Surveillance Consortium will test shelter and clinic cats for current and past infections, analyze viral samples, and study the hemagglutinin protein related to the virus. The data will help inform best practices for monitoring and controlling H5N1 outbreaks and aid public health efforts.
This initiative reflects our commitment to addressing urgent public and animal health risks through translational research, addressing the catastrophic impacts of H5N1 on feline populations.
The CFHC Feline H5N1 Surveillance Consortium aims to first test cats within New York state and to establish protocols for future national surveillance on infectious diseases.
