900 Pieces of Vintage Furniture Were Lost in One Night
""The tragedy is these pieces lived 70 years and were ready to live another 70 years," said David Singh, who co-owns the business with his partner, Lars Balderskilde. "Some are so unique that there are maybe a handful in the world left.""
""Niagara Falls coming out of the building," Singh said."
""We do not have one piece of inventory that can be salvageable," Singh said."
""This is a 100 percent wipeout.""
A fire broke out before midnight on the third floor of a Red Hook brick warehouse that housed Lanoba Design, architects, a community newspaper, and dozens of artists. The shop contained about 8,000 square feet and 900 handpicked vintage pieces, including rare designer furniture and a restored 12-foot teak dining table. Flames, a collapsed roof, and massive flooding from the harbor at roughly 50,000 gallons a minute destroyed what fire did not char. Heavy timber structure may have accelerated spread. Owners reported no salvageable inventory or tools and estimate losses in the millions, describing a total wipeout and sleepless nights.
