Meta Rejects EU AI Code of Practice, Warns of Growth Risks and Legal Overreach
Briefly

Meta Platforms has opted not to sign the EU's voluntary AI code of practice, citing concerns about legal risks and its potential impact on AI innovation. Joel Kaplan, Meta's global affairs chief, criticized the EU's approach as overly restrictive and misaligned with industry needs. The code aims to support responsible AI practices but remains non-binding. Other companies, including ASML Holding and Airbus, share similar skepticism, advocating for delaying its implementation. In contrast, OpenAI intends to sign the code, indicating differing views among AI leaders on achieving regulatory balance.
Europe is heading down the wrong path on AI. This code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act.
We share concerns raised by these businesses that this over-reach will throttle the development and deployment of frontier AI models in Europe, and stunt European companies looking to build businesses on top of them.
