A longtime arts leader and cultural advocate is Oakland's new cultural affairs manager
"A longtime arts leader will join the City of Oakland in March as the new cultural affairs manager. Lyz Luke, a cultural advocate with two decades of experience in the field, who most recently served as the executive director of Living Jazz, an Oakland-based arts and education organization was selected from a pool of more than 200 applicants. Luke will begin her new role on March 2."
"Luke serves on the board of directors for California for the Arts, a statewide arts advocacy organization and secretary of board for California Arts Advocates, the organization's lobbying arm. And she served for six years as a governor on the San Francisco Chapter Board of the Recording Academy, the organization that awards the GRAMMYs. In her role as a cultural steward with Living Jazz, she has developed funding strategies to help under-resourced communities access the arts."
"The cultural affairs manager position was cut over the summer, as part of a round of layoffs designed to help balance the city's budget. Arts advocates joined with city councilmember Carroll Fife in sounding the alarm about the crucial role the manager role plays in helping arts organizations, and the city council reinstated the position last December."
Lyz Luke will assume the role of Oakland cultural affairs manager on March 2 after selection from more than 200 applicants. She brings two decades of cultural advocacy experience and recently served as executive director of Living Jazz. Luke holds leadership roles with California for the Arts, California Arts Advocates, and previously served on the Recording Academy's San Francisco Chapter Board. She has developed funding strategies to expand arts access in under-resourced communities and has opposed local arts budget cuts. Her core duty is to secure county, state, federal, and philanthropic funding to be awarded directly to artists, while assisting the Cultural Affairs Commission.
