Bay Area deli with roots going back a century closes another location
"The Genova Delicatessen at 2064 Treat Blvd. in Walnut Creek permanently closed on Nov. 15 after nearly 30 years, according to a sign on the window spotted by SFGATE (and first reported by the East Bay Times). "We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your loyalty, support, and friendship over the years," read the sign. "It has been our great pleasure and honor to serve you.""
"Lorenzo Balbi and Pietro Pira opened the original deli in Oakland's Temescal in 1926, named after Balbi's hometown of Genoa. After its 2016 closure due to a rent dispute, the iconic Temescal space become home to popular restaurant and wine bar Snail Bar in 2021. When the old-school Italian joint closed, Oaklanders mourned the loss of a one-of-a-kind neighborhood gem."
"'There isn't any other place like Genova in Oakland - nowhere else where you'll find a whole lineup of wise-cracking deli men and bad-ass deli ladies who will assemble your sandwich to order meticulously, weighing out each portion of prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and roasted peppers,' wrote Luke Tsai for the East Bay Express in 2016, calling the 'Genova Salami' one of the best cold sandwiches in the East Bay."
The Genova Delicatessen at 2064 Treat Blvd. in Walnut Creek permanently closed on Nov. 15 after nearly 30 years. A sign thanked customers for their loyalty, support, and friendship and said it was a pleasure and honor to serve them. The Walnut Creek location at 1105 S. California Blvd. and a Napa restaurant remain open. The deli is known for mortadella and salami-stuffed sandwiches, ravioli, and other Italian goods and has been family-run for four generations, though the Napa location is owned by a different branch. The original Oakland Temescal deli opened in 1926 and closed in 2016; its space became Snail Bar in 2021. The Genova Salami earned recognition as one of the East Bay's best cold sandwiches, and the closure of old-school locations prompted local mourning.
