Bay Area restaurant served eviction notice amid owner's cancer fight
"We're trying to renegotiate because my husband is dying and we need help. They evicted us, and that was like a punch in the gut."
"The Westendorfs told the commission that they needed to reduce their rent to $12,500 or they would be forced to close the restaurant, as well as Pelagic Cantina and the Fish Market, which they also own on Johnson Pier, according to the staff report."
"Last Thursday, the Westendorfs received a three-day notice to pay rent or quit from the SMCHD, but they did not share the information with their staff while they discussed next steps with their lawyers, Mishelle said."
Ketch Harbor Pub abruptly closed after receiving an eviction notice from its landlord, the San Mateo County Harbor District, for unpaid rent exceeding $155,000. Co-owner Mishelle Westendorf requested a rent reduction from $20,500 to $12,500 monthly due to her husband David's Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, but the landlord did not approve the request. The couple made partial payments in September and October but fell behind afterward. After receiving a three-day pay-or-quit notice, they were forced to close. The Westendorfs also own Pelagic Cantina and Fish Market on Johnson Pier, which they hope to keep operating. The eviction notice was posted on the storefront while Mishelle was driving David to Stanford Hospital for cancer treatment.
