It was a historic gas station. Now it serves Berkeley's most coveted burger.
"Unlike the former Station and the other restaurants that have graced this bizarre island over the years, the food at the Station is very good, if not great, and the prices are reasonable - everything is under $14. The vibes are lovely, too. The new owners expanded the garden, added a fresh coat of paint, good music, a fire pit and a lot of seating."
"It's been exciting (and humbling) to see how the neighborhood has embraced The Station so quickly. In a phone interview, she and Hallowell said they had been eyeing the location for years to bring back their pandemic pop-up Back Alley Burgers."
"It's so weird and kind of iconic. That's what made him stop in while on a bike ride with his grandson back in November 2024. That particular day, it took a long time to get his burger, and the restaurant's owner seemed tired."
The Station, located at the intersection of Russell Street and Claremont Avenue in south Berkeley, has undergone a significant transformation under new ownership. Veteran East Bay restaurateurs Donna Insalaco and Charlie Hallowell, known for their Oakland restaurant Pizzaiolo, took over the historic site eight months ago to establish a permanent location for their Back Alley Burgers concept. The reimagined restaurant features quality food priced under $14, an expanded garden, improved aesthetics, live music, and a fire pit. The venue has attracted considerable attention, including celebrity visits, and draws substantial crowds on weekends and warm days, with lines often extending to the sidewalk.
