A tightening OUSD budget leaves little room for raises this year
"I greet every child by name at Prescott coming through the gate,"
"Some days I want to take off. I don't, because I know the school will suffer."
"We want dignity,"
"We want to be recognized. We want you guys to help us be able to stay here and not move out of the city."
Oakland Unified School District faces a deadline to produce a plan to remain financially solvent while labor groups press for higher wages. Service Employees International Union Local 1021 members — including administrative assistants, instructional aides, culture and climate keepers, attendance clerks, and other support staff — urged salaries aligned with Bay Area cost of living. The union's last raise was in 2023-2024. Many longtime employees earn among the district's lowest wages. Instructional support specialists start at $22 an hour ($27,000 annually) and top out near $37,000 after seven years. Culture and climate keepers earn $30,000 to $41,500 and assume safety duties formerly handled by school police. Workers described exhausting, risky work and requested recognition, dignity, and the ability to remain living in the city.
