"With mere weeks before the New York City mayoral election, charter schools, facing the prospect of a new mayor opposed to their expansion in Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, are framing the " March for Excellence" rally as part of a yearslong l arger figh t for the equal treatment of charter school students. The comes at a delicate moment for the charter sector."
More than 200 New York City public charter schools marched across Brooklyn to assert a child's right to learn and press for equal treatment. Eva Moskowitz of Success Academy mobilized supporters through webinars, emails and outreach and led about 15,000 students, parents and staff in a "March for Excellence" to Printing House Square near City Hall. Participants demanded equity, justice, opportunity and equal access to excellent schools. The rally occurred weeks before the mayoral election as candidate Zohran Mamdani signals opposition to charter expansion and potential funding reviews. Charters serve 15% of city students and have seen slowed enrollment growth since the pandemic.
