"I've been waiting on this one forever. Our kids deserve that opportunity,"
"For $5 million, approximately 50 cents on the dollar of original construction cost, the district is providing immediate educational enhancements for students,"
"The purchase also doesn't impact the general fund as funding comes from bond Measure S."
Alum Rock Union School District is purchasing the former Downtown College Prep Alum Rock Charter School at 2888 Ocala Ave for $5 million using Measure S bond funds. The 37,295-square-foot campus contains 14 classrooms, computer labs, a warming kitchen and the district’s first gymnasium, and will provide relief after Joseph George Middle School’s closure left Ocala Middle School at full capacity. The board of trustees unanimously approved the sale on Sept. 11 with an expected close in the second week of November. District leaders estimate building an equivalent facility would cost $10–15 million amid a $20 million deficit.
