East San Jose school district cuts workers due to deficit - San Jose Spotlight
"These cuts are really hard for both the administration and the board to make knowing the needs of our students. We are a district with a student population that demands all the resources available to support our kids. East Side has been very aggressive in generating resources, making prior cuts and passing a parcel tax ... and we will continue to invest in them."
"Social workers deal with the mental health and wellness of our students. Counselors deal with the academic support and the well-being of our students and advisors ... make sure that our campuses are safe."
East Side Union High School District is implementing layoffs affecting more than 80 workers, effective at the start of the 2026-27 school year, following a school board vote in late January. The district faces a projected $30 million budget deficit stemming from the loss of temporary federal COVID relief funds and significant enrollment decline over eight years. The layoffs will impact 44 certified employees, including special education teachers, counselors, social workers, and associate principals, along with 41 classified staff such as custodians and community liaisons. Despite passing a $49 parcel tax in 2024 with 72.6% voter approval, generating approximately $6.4 million annually, the district continues struggling financially. Union leadership expresses concern about losing critical support staff who address student mental health, academic support, and campus safety.
