Birmingham High begins its flag football season Wednesday at Arleta with a largely underclassman roster and only two seniors. Coach Jim Rose is teaching new flag-football rules, including punting and allowing the defense to line up one yard from the scrimmage before the snap. Bella Gonzalez, a softball second baseman, will start at quarterback while the No. 1 quarterback recovers from a knee injury. Freshman Ellie St. Hubert will play safety and receiver and has impressed coaches. Banning enters as the defending City Open Division champion. Birmingham won the inaugural title in 2023 and believes its athleticism has improved.
