In Scotland, ministers are criticized for insufficient progress in increasing exam passes among teenagers from deprived areas, despite past pledges to address this issue. The attainment gap between pupils in wealthy and deprived areas has narrowed slightly in National 5s and Highers, yet the overall improvement remains slow. Scotland's attainment gap data is similar to pre-Covid statistics, raising concerns about stagnation in educational progress. Opposition parties charge that the Scottish National Party's promises have gone unfulfilled, while the education secretary defended efforts being made in literacy and university access instead of exam performance.
Data from the Scottish Qualifications Authority showed this year's attainment gap was very similar to that of 2019, the year before the Covid crisis hit, when the gap for National 5s was 17 points.
Scottish Labour said education was stagnating under the Scottish National party. Pam Duncan-Glancy, Scottish Labour's education spokesperson, accused Jenny Gilruth of deflecting questions about the failure to meet its target.
