Staten Island HS football: Curtis set to induct 11 players, 1 coach into Ring of Honor
"Curtis High School's football Ring of Honor will increase by 12 during a ceremony at its PSAL home game against New Dorp on Oct. 3. The second annual induction will include 11 players and one coach at halftime of the contest. The honorees include former head coach Al Fabbri, as well as players Wayne "Chops" Derrick; Jeff Forde; Mike Goodman; George Hassell; Kenny King; Gabe Mokwuah; Jemal Murph; Mike Pressuti; Gene Smith; Peter Timmins and Jovan Whitehead."
"Wayne "Chops" Derrick (1957 graduate) The former star gridder had the honor of being named the first African-American to captain the Warriors' football team in 1955. His success on the field helped him earn a full scholarship to South Carolina State University. The West Brighton resident would eventually become a great influence and role model to numerous Staten Island youngsters, including as a coach. He was recognized for those attributes after being named a Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame Unsung Hero in 2007."
"The 12 new recipients will give the Warriors' Ring of Honor a total of 18 members overall. During the inaugural ceremony a year ago, coaches Andy Barbieri and Fred Olivieri and players Dominque Easley, Steve Gregory, Dino Mangiero and Vernon Turner were inducted. Curtis High School will induct 12 individuals into its football Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony at the PSAL home game against New Dorp on Oct. 3. Eleven former players and one coach will be honored, bringing the Ring of Honor roster to 18 members. The All-Class reunion is open to former players, friends, families and alumni and includes a reception in the school's old gym wing at 4 p.m., with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Honorees include coach Al Fabbri and players such as Wayne "Chops" Derrick.
