Governor Maura Healey reported that the Department of Education is withholding $108 million in education funding for Massachusetts, which was already approved by Congress to be received on July 1. This withholding damages children, educators, and communities as districts may need to lay off staff, cancel programs, and disrupt learning. The funds, primarily from federal grant programs, support critical educational services and initiatives such as teacher development and resources for multilingual learners. The department notified state governments about the grants being under review days before their intended disbursement.
Governor Maura Healey emphasized that the withholding of $108 million in education funding by the Department of Education directly harms children, educators, and communities across Massachusetts.
Healey stated, "Every day that goes by without this education funding hurts children, educators, communities and our economy. Without this funding, districts are going to be forced to lay off staff, delay or cancel programs and services, and disrupt learning."
The Department of Education informed state governments on June 30 that certain education grants would not be issued and are currently "under review," which has resulted in significant financial uncertainties for various educational programs.
The affected grants support essential educational initiatives such as effective instruction, academic enrichment, community learning centers, and provide resources for multilingual learners and mental health services.
