The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach opened a public rehabilitation exhibit where visitors can watch sick and injured sea turtles being treated. The new area includes a roughly 4,000-gallon pool and capacity to tend up to four turtles simultaneously. The first on display is Porkchop, an 85-pound green sea turtle that had a flipper amputated after fishing-line entanglement and arrived with a hook lodged in her throat. Porkchop quickly began eating after surgery and remains enthusiastic about food despite the amputation. Staff treat turtles suffering from plastic ingestion, boat strikes, entanglement, and other human-caused hazards. Green sea turtles live year-round in the lower San Gabriel River and their local population is rising.
