A report from the Climate Change Committee criticizes the UK government for not adequately addressing climate change threats since taking office. Despite some investment in flood defences, the report indicates that progress in enhancing resilience is lagging or stalled. Climate-related extremes, such as unprecedented heat and rainfall, pose significant risks to health and the economy. Baroness Brown emphasized the urgent need for the government to take climate adaptation seriously, as none of the 46 assessed areas showed good progress in this regard.
"We are seeing climate impact happening faster and more intensely and increasing [but] government just doesn't yet seem to be taking it seriously," said Baroness Brown.
"We are putting 2.65bn into upgrading, maintaining and building new flood defences. But we absolutely know, of course, there's more that needs to be done," stated Floods Minister Emma Hardy.
