Map: Garnet Fire, stubbornly burning, reaches McKinley Grove
"Now in its third week, the Garnet Fire continues to challenge firefighters, exceeding 50,000 acres and reaching a grove of ancient sequoias in the national forest. Garnet, which was started by lightning on Aug. 24, was at 54,925 acres (86 square miles) with 14% containment as of Monday, Sept. 8, said the U.S. Forest Service's fire management team. It is California's third-largest wildfire of the year."
"On Sunday, Sept. 7, the fire entered McKinley Grove. A sprinkler system had been installed to protect the grove, and firefighters remained there until it was unsafe, said a report from the Sequoia National Forest. There was no crown fire and no trees fully on fire, it said. The grove has about 170 giant sequoias on 100 acres, the largest of the trees more than 230 feet tall."
"The evacuation zone, which was expanded on Sept. 7, now covers 400 square miles in the Sierra Nevada east of Fresno. The map above shows the evacuation area in red and the approximate fire perimeter as a black line. Updates and details, including evacuation warning zones, can be found at the Fresno County's emergency website. Originally Published: September 9, 2025 at 8:21 AM PDT"
