Pakistan's deadly floods worsened by global warming: study DW 08/07/2025
Briefly

A new study indicates that climate change has intensified Pakistan's monsoon rains, leading to more severe flooding. The World Weather Attribution report reveals that rainfall was 36% higher in July compared to the previous year, predominantly due to climate change effects, which increase the moisture in the atmosphere. The country has experienced over 300 flood-related deaths since late June 2025, with urbanization and poor housing in flood-prone areas exacerbating the crisis. Experts recommend building resilient structures and avoiding construction in vulnerable zones to mitigate future impacts.
"Every tenth of a degree of warming will lead to heavier monsoon rainfall," said Mariam Zachariah, lead author of the WWA study and an environmental researcher at Imperial College London.
"Half of Pakistan's urban population lives in fragile settlements where floods collapse homes and cost lives," Maja Vahlberg of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre said.
