Nations initiated a crucial meeting to finalize a treaty addressing plastic pollution, a global crisis impacting ecosystems and human health. During negotiations, disagreement persists over the necessity of reducing plastic production, especially from oil-producing countries. Advocates emphasize the urgency of a legally binding instrument to mobilize effective global action, as plastic pollution severely affects marine life, biodiversity, and vulnerable communities. The ongoing deliberations in Geneva are seen as a historic chance to tackle this issue comprehensively and solve the widespread problems caused by plastic waste.
Luis Vayas Valdivieso, the chair of the negotiating committee, stated, "We are pretty sure nobody wants plastic pollution. Still, we have not been able to find a systematic and an effective way to stop it."
Angelique Pouponneau emphasized the urgency, saying, "It would be a tragedy if we didn't live up to our mandate. It’s the world's final opportunity to get this done and to get it done right."
