"Hundreds of people responded to a Guardian online callout to share their experiences of travelling to Europe since the rules came into effect. Many reported severe delays, which have caused some to miss their flights."
"Dave Giles, 47, an IT manager from Raunds in Northamptonshire, missed his flight home on 12 April from Copenhagen, where he had been to a music festival with his family, after being caught in long queues at passport control."
"Staff appeared aware of the issue, but were unable to resolve it in time. A supervisor was making calls asking them to hold the gate open, but by the time he reached the front, the gate had been closed a few seconds before we arrived."
The new EU entry-exit system has led to extensive delays at border checks, with reports of travellers waiting up to three hours. Implemented gradually since October 2025, the system affects Schengen countries and has resulted in many missed flights. Issues include unaccepted fingerprints, lack of guidance at kiosks, and repeated registration processes. Travellers have expressed frustration over insufficient staff assistance. One traveller, Dave Giles, missed his flight home due to long queues and inadequate kiosk availability, incurring additional costs for new flights.
