EU and US continue to grapple with child labor DW 06/11/2025
"The findings of our report offer hope and show that progress is possible," said ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo, in a press release. "But we must not be blindsided by the fact that we still have a long way to go before we achieve our goal of eliminating child labor."
"While child labor is more common in low-income countries, it still exists in high-income ones," she told DW. "Often, it's hidden in agriculture, informal work, or within marginalized communities."
Child labor remains a significant global issue despite reductions since 2000, currently impacting approximately 138 million children. Recent reports indicate a decline, linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated poverty for many. While sub-Saharan Africa comprises the majority, the problem exists in wealthier regions, often unnoticed. Analysts stress that child labor affects education and well-being, and poverty and inequality render children vulnerable regardless of their geographical location, necessitating persistent efforts towards complete elimination.
