Italy's appetite for wood fuels Albanian forest crisis DW 04/29/2025
Briefly

Albania has experienced substantial deforestation, with about 33% of its woody biomass lost in the past two decades. The region of Tropoja, notable for its beech trees, faces illegal logging despite a moratorium on commercial logging instituted in 2016, which restricts tree felling to that needed for firewood. Though the moratorium aims to protect forests, illegal logging remains prevalent, raising concerns over environmental sustainability and forest preservation in the country as highlighted by local residents and forestry experts.
"In the last 20 years, Albania has lost approximately 33% of its woody biomass," says Abdulla Diku, a forestry engineer who has been studying the situation in Albanian forests for years.
Albania introduced a ten-year moratorium on commercial logging in 2016, allowing tree felling only for firewood purposes under strict regulations.
