More than half of EU member nations are opting to utilize a budgetary exemption proposed by the European Commission, allowing them to spend up to 1.5% of their GDP on defense without breaching fiscal rules. This decision—prompted by U.S. pressures and security concerns due to the war in Ukraine—will enable significant military investments. Germany and Poland are among the leading countries pursuing this exemption, with expectations of hundreds of billions of euros being allocated for rearmament in Europe by 2030.
"In view of the threats to our freedom and peace on our continent, the rule for our defence now has to be 'whatever it takes'," he said in March.
"We are in an era of rearmament. And Europe is ready to massively boost its defence spending," she said.
