Tui, Europe's leading travel operator, has challenged Airbnb's assertion that the hotel industry is to blame for overtourism, disputing the fairness of being scapegoated. Amidst rising tensions in tourist hotspots like Barcelona and Venice, Airbnb's VP Theo Yedinsky defended the company's role, stating that overtourism is primarily driven by traditional hotels. Tui countered this by highlighting that housing issues and protests stem from the secondary home market and short-term rentals, not their operations. Regulatory actions in several countries reflect a broader concern about the impact of short-term rentals on local communities.
“We end up getting a lot of the blame, especially in city centres but the reality is overtourism is really driven by hotels,” said Theo Yedinsky, Airbnb's VP.
Alexander Panczuk of Tui states, 'It is not scapegoating, it is a very neutral analysis of the problem,' emphasizing housing issues linked to short-term rentals.
