US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed a desire to reinstate a tariff-free agreement for civil aviation, highlighting the importance of free trade for the aviation sector. This comes as Airbus announced a significant deal with Vietjet for 150 single-aisle jets, emphasizing the growth of Vietnam's aviation market, which has increased by 7.5% annually. The deal is set to bolster Airbus’s presence in Vietnam, which already relies heavily on their aircraft. Meanwhile, concerns over potential tariffs have created hesitation around purchasing Boeing jets, showcasing the complexities involved in US trade relationships.
Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said the scale of the airline's orders was backed by plans to develop a major aviation hub in Vietnam, which Airbus says has seen its aviation market grow by 7.5 percent a year.
Duffy added that while the White House was aware that the US is a net exporter in aerospace, it was also dealing with a complex tariff situation. Now, again, you look at what free trade has done for aviation. It's been remarkable for them.
